This Day in Hockey History
1994 - Bruce McNall charged
Los Angeles Kings part-owner and team president Bruce McNall is charged with defrauding banks to obtain an estimated $200 million in loans.
The charges come just over a year after McNall defaults on a $90-million loan, leading him to sell his controlling interest in the team after Bank of America threatens to force the Kings into bankruptcy.
One month after being charged, McNall pleads guilty to five counts of conspiracy and fraud, admitting to defrauding six banks out of $236 million over 10 years.
He is sentenced to 70 months in prison and is released in 2001.
2008 - Lightning fire Melrose
The struggling Tampa Bay Lightning fire head coach Barry Melrose 16 games into his return behind the bench, naming associate coach Rick Tocchet his replacement.
Melrose is dismissed five months into the job after leaving his role as a television analyst to resume his coaching career.
The Lightning (who are 5-7-4 at the time of Melrose's firing) finish second-last in the Eastern Conference with a 24-40-18 record.
Tocchet and general manager Brian Lawton are fired in 2010.
