Bobby Bowden AMA: Hall of Fame coach talks playing vs. son, Deion Sanders, dadgum

Douglas Jones / US PRESSWIRE

Former Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden joined fans for a special Reddit AMA Tuesday morning in support of the Kidz1stFund, giving some interesting answers to the many questions received.

Bowden was asked how he felt when his son, former West Virginia wide receiver Tommy Bowden, and his team beat the Florida State Seminoles for the first time with him as the coach:

Well, you know what it takes a little of the pain off the fact that it is your son. Because football is a game where you have to win. When we first started that series it was a lot of fun, you know? Playing your son. But, as it went on Ann and I started to not look forward to it quite as much. Somebody's got to lose.

The 84-year-old was also asked to name the best athlete he ever coached, and the answer was clear:

I think the best athlete I ever coached was Deion Sanders. We had other players who were good in their own way. But, I don't think we ever had anyone with as much natural talent.

Of course, the people wanted to know where his famous catchphrase "dadgum" originated:

I picked it up from my dad. He didn't swear, but he'd use words to make up for it. Yeah, I'm sure I got that one from my dad.

When asked if he could coach anywhere except the places he already had, Bowden wasn't shy about his love for the Yellowhammer State - and a job that never was:

If I could coach anywhere except here it would be Alabama. It has always been my dream to coach for University of Alabama. I was offered the job one time but I felt like I was too old at the time.

Finally, who would be his pick to play him in a biopic?

There were some people that came to see me about making a movie, but they didn't end up doing it. They talked about, dadgummit, about the guy that played Jack Lengyel in We Are Marshall. Yea, Matthew McConaughey!

Alright, alright, alright.
