J.J. Spaun: Wins BMW PGA Championship

Rotowire• ·

Spaun won the BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour following his five-under 67 final round, winning the tournament by two strokes over Aaron Rai, Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy and Manuel Elvira.

Analysis:

Spaun started the day at 12-under, but he surged to the top of the leaderboard Sunday thanks to his four-under back nine, which included three-straight birdies from holes 14 to 16 and another birdie on the 18th. It looked like Spaun and Elvira were headed to a playoff, but the latter ended up making double bogey on the 18th, handing Spaun his first career victory on the DP World Tour and second win of the year (Valero Texas Open in early April). He led the field at Wentworth Club in par-5 scoring while ranking fourth in birdies, 11th in SG: OTT, 13th in SG: Approach and 16th in SG: Putting. Spaun won't participate in next week's FedEx Open de France but could play the following week at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
