Rutgers' Dylan Lonergan: Starting quarterback for Week 1

Rotowire ·

Lonergan will be Rutgers' starting quarterback Sept. 3 at Massachusetts, Pete Thamel of ESPN reports.

Analysis:

Rutgers' quarterback competition boiled down to Lonergan and team mainstay AJ Surace before the team ultimately decided on the Boston College transfer. The former began his career with Alabama before enrolling at BC in 2025, where he broke out in terms of production. That year, Lonergan completed 190 of 284 pass attempts for 2,025 yards and a 12-5 TD-INT ratio. Though those numbers offer promise, they came with huge highs and just as low lows: he went four consecutive games without a touchdown and lacks the running ability to make something with his legs. Still, it helps that Lonergan is more proven than a lot of FBS quarterbacks, and he will look to prove why the Scarlet Knights putting their faith in him was warranted.
