Davis Riley: Can't hold 54-lead in Detroit

Rotowire ·

Riley carded a 15-under cumulative score at the Rocket Classic to finish solo third and three strokes back of winner Michael Thorbjornsen.

Analysis:

Riley went bogey-free across the second and third rounds, and he held a one-stroke lead heading into Sunday following a seven-under 63 score Saturday. He opened the final round with a birdie but quickly lost his lead after carding three bogeys over the next five holes as he struggled to adapt to the wet and windy conditions. He recovered to go two-under over his last 12 holes to secure his best finish since his T2 at the 2025 PGA Championship, and he finished the Rocket Classic second in SG: Putting, T4 in birdies, T10 in GIR and 20th in SG: Approach. That said, Riley will surely be kicking himself having not come away with the win in Detroit, as a victory would have catapulted him up to 61st in the FedExCup Standings. Instead, he'll head into next week's Wyndham Championship 108th in the Standings, with the top-70 qualifying for the playoffs. Riley has finished T13-MC-T38-MC in his four prior outings at the Wyndham since 2022.
