Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay provided an update on Aaron Donald potentially joining the team, saying talks with the retired defensive tackle are going well.
"There's some conversations that we've had. We've loosely had some different timelines that are kind of temporary, and I want to keep those between us," McVay told reporters Friday.
He added, "I know this: things are going in the right direction, and if there's an arrow, it's trending upwards. ... Once we get back to Woodland Hills, we'll have a better idea of what that timeline looks like. There won't be any decision in terms of Aaron's decision while we're here."
The Rams' training facility and headquarters are located in Woodland Hills. McVay's comments suggest that Donald won't make a final decision on whether to come out of retirement until Los Angeles' training camp concludes.
McVay has stated the Rams would welcome Donald back if he decides to return to the NFL. Donald last suited up in 2023 and has been retired for the last two seasons.
The three-time Defensive Player of the Year started a workout program to get into game shape after L.A. acquired star pass-rusher Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Jared Verse and three draft picks. Garrett, who broke the NFL's single-season sack record in 2025, told reporters Wednesday that he would love to play alongside Donald.
"If he's here, I'm going to be excited to be his teammate, his partner in crime," Garrett said after a Rams training camp practice. "I think we're going to do great things. But it's a difficult thing, coming back."
Donald, who turned 35 in May, is considered one of the best defensive players in league history, earning 10 Pro Bowl nods and eight first-team All-Pro selections during his decorated 10-year career with Los Angeles.
