Marco Penge: MC at Genesis Scottish Open

Rotowire ·

Penge missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open by one stroke following a one-under 69 in the second round.

Analysis:

Penge needed to gain two strokes to make the cut after going even-par in the opening round. He carded four birdies in the second round, but that work was mitigated by a bogey and a double bogey on the par-4 13th, and he was unable to convert on his 18-foot birdie put on the 18th hole. He gained strokes off the tee, around the green and with his putter, but Penge lost 3.42 strokes in his approach play while connecting on 22 of 36 greens in regulation. He's finished outside the top-20 in eight of his last nine tournaments (four MC's), with his T4 at the Valspar Championship in March being the exception. Penge will tee off next week at The Open Championship, where he's failed to make the cut in each of his three prior appearances at golf's oldest major.
