McIlroy carded a three-over 73 on Sunday to finish in a share of 32nd place at the U.S. Open.
Analysis:
Iron play has been one of the strengths of McIlroy's game over the last couple years, but he really struggled in that department at Shinnecock. McIlroy ranked 67th in SG: Approach and T63 in GIR's for the week. The Northern Irishman was truly right in the mix on Friday, but he air-mailed three straight greens with wedges, all of which led to bogeys to take him out of it. Distance control with the short clubs used to be a big issue for McIlroy and that really seemed to pop back up in the windy conditions. McIlroy will look to sharpen that area of his game for the final major of the year next month at the Open Championship. McIlroy will skip his third Signature Event of the season next week.
