It's the first time this milestone has been reached by an NHL player since Jaromir Jagr on Oct. 6, 2011. pic.twitter.com/jBAFoBsArC
Crosby picked up another assist on Evgeni Malkin's 500th career goal later in the game and capped the contest in style with an overtime winner.

The 37-year-old is the only active player to reach 1,600 points. Alex Ovechkin is the closest to Crosby among those still playing at 1,553.

In April, Crosby cracked the top 10 on the NHL's all-time points list and became the 14th player to post 1,000 career assists.
The Nova Scotia-born center already has 19 point-per-game seasons under his belt, and he's tied with Wayne Gretzky for the most in league history.
A former NHL great who also hails from the Maritime province - and who racked up 1,274 points in 1,416 games as a defenseman - had some fun with Crosby's achievement.
Congrats to the 2nd best player to come out of Nova Scotia on 1,600 pts. 👍 https://t.co/H6sxqXWXBU
