American Marsch proud to be Canada boss: 'I'd rather coach our team'

Canada coach Jesse Marsch could not hide his delight after his side's 2-1 friendly international victory over the United States men's national team in Kansas City.

Saturday's result marked the Canadian men's team's first away win over the United States in 67 years.

"I'd rather coach our team right now, 100% no questions asked," Marsch, who was interviewed for the USA men's job before ex-boss Gregg Berhalter was reappointed in 2023, said after the win.

"You can see the mentality that has been developed. You can see the way this team plays. You can see how much they love playing for the national team.

"They're willing to put their careers and lives and the way they play on the line to be the best they can be for each other and for the team. And that's all you can ask for as a coach."

U.S. interim coach Mikey Varas took responsibility for tactical shortcomings in the loss -- but also pointed the finger at the mentality of his players.

"I love those guys, but the mentality to fight and to run, and to sacrifice. I can't do that for them," Varas said. "That's on them. It's a combination between me and them. All of us together."
