Report: Mavs send Hardaway to Pistons, land Grimes
The Dallas Mavericks are sending veteran wing Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Detroit Pistons for guard Quentin Grimes, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Dallas is also sending Detroit a 2025 second-round pick and two 2028 second-round selections.
The Mavericks remove roughly $12 million from their books in the player swap and pick up a young player looking to have a bounce-back season.
The move puts the Mavericks approximately $15.7 million below the first tax apron, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.
Hardaway was Dallas' third-leading scorer during the regular season, averaging 14.4 points in 79 regular-season contests. However, head coach Jason Kidd struggled to find a role for him in the 2024 NBA Finals due to his defense. He only played 47 minutes over the five-game series.
Grimes averaged seven points and two rebounds in 51 games with the New York Knicks and Pistons during the 2023-24 season. The 2021 first-round pick has shown flashes as a shooter and scorer but had career-low shooting percentages from the field and from three last year.
The Pistons still have $51.1 million in open cap space, reports Spotrac's Keith Smith.
