Tottenham Hotspur sacked interim manager Cristian Stellini on Monday following Sunday's humiliating 6-1 defeat to Newcastle United.

Former player and assistant Ryan Mason will take charge for the club's final six games of the Premier League season.

"Sunday's performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable," Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy wrote in a statement. "It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened, and whilst myself, the board, the coaches, and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately, the responsibility is mine."

Mason served as interim coach during the last two months of the 2020-21 season following Jose Mourinho's dismissal, going 4-0-3 before returning as an assistant to Antonio Conte. He became the youngest man to oversee a Premier League match when he led Tottenham to a 2-1 victory over Southampton on his coaching debut as a 29-year-old in April 2021.

Stellini stepped into the hot seat in March after Spurs fired Conte, but the Italian failed to galvanize the team in his four matches at the helm. Tottenham won only one of four games - at home in contentious fashion against Brighton & Hove Albion - and the heavy loss to Newcastle expedited his exit.

The defeat dashed Spurs' hopes of reaching the Champions League for just the second time in four seasons. They're six points behind fourth-place Manchester United in the race for the final Champions League spot with two more matches played.

Levy noted he met with the player committee Monday to outline his expectations for the remainder of the campaign.

"We are all clear we need to deliver performances which earn your amazing support," the chairman wrote.

But fans have called for Levy to resign amid Tottenham's dismal run of form and unprecedented upheaval at both pitch and boardroom levels.

Stellini's firing comes just three days after Fabio Paratici resigned as managing director of football over his role in Juventus' false accounting scandal. Paratici, who was Juventus' sporting director for three seasons, faces a 30-month ban from all of football.

Levy has been trying to win back Spurts supporters ever since leading the club's bid to join the European Super League in 2021. A recent survey by The Athletic found only 8.6% of supporters trust the 61-year-old with on-pitch decisions.

Before leaving, Conte emphasized during a now-infamous press conference that the club lacked the ambition to win trophies.

"Tottenham's story is this: 20 years there is the owner, and they've never won something," Conte said. "Why?"

Tottenham's next match is at home to Manchester United on Thursday.
