Beverley: OKC ball boy threatened to kill me after 2013 Westbrook injury
Los Angeles Lakers guard Patrick Beverley says he received a death threat from an Oklahoma City Thunder ball boy after he caused an injury to Russell Westbrook during the 2013 NBA playoffs.
Beverley, who was playing for the Rockets at the time, collided with Westbrook in Game 2 of Houston's first-round playoff series against the Thunder. Westbrook suffered a torn meniscus on the play and missed the remainder of the playoffs.
"I get to OKC the next game - police officers in front," Beverley said on the latest episode of his podcast. "They put a police car in front of my house in Houston. I get to the hotel. I'm on the floor by myself, police guy at the door. I'm looking. I go out in the morning for tea or coffee, like a Starbucks, police guys with me. They passing out papers of a young guy's face on it. … He threatened to kill. The shit was real."
Beverley said he only learned about Westbrook's injury from then-Rockets head coach Kevin McHale, who warned him that the incident had become a hot topic of conversation.
Asked if he was scared, Beverley responded, "Hell no. I wish I would've ran into his ass."
Beverley and Westbrook traded barbs over the years but appear to have put their differences aside since becoming teammates in L.A. this season.
