Mickelson files request to play in LIV event, registers for 2 majors

Phil Mickelson requested a release to play in the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational in London this June and has registered for the upcoming PGA Championship and U.S. Open, his agency announced Monday, according to Golf Digest's Daniel Rapaport.

PGA TOUR players had until Monday to file requests to participate in Greg Norman's breakaway circuit.

Mickelson hasn't committed to either side.

"Phil currently has no concrete plans on when and where he will play," said Steve Loy, Mickelson's agent. "Any actions taken are in no way a reflection of a final decision made, but rather to keep all options open."

Mickelson hasn't played a professional event since stepping away from the game in February after his criticism of the PGA TOUR went viral.

The 51-year-old won the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island last year. This year's event runs May 19-22 at Southern Hills in Oklahoma.

The LIV Golf Invitational in London takes place June 9-11, and the U.S. Open is set for June 16-19.

Over 70 players have filed requests to join the LIV Golf International Series, including 15 ranked in the world's top 100, according to Sports Illustrated's Bob Harig.
