Liberty, coach Hopkins split after 2 seasons
The New York Liberty and head coach Walt Hopkins have agreed to part ways, the team announced Monday.
The Liberty's search for their next head coach is ongoing.
New York went 14-40 (.259) in two seasons under Hopkins, including 12-20 in 2021. Finishing as the eighth seed this past year, the Liberty advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2017. However, they fell to the Phoenix Mercury on the road in a first-round knockout game.
Though wins were often tough to come by, the rebuilding Liberty produced three All-Rookie Team selections: Jazmine Jones in 2020, and DiDi Richards and Michaela Onyenwere, the Rookie of the Year, in 2021. Veteran wing Betnijah Laney also registered her first All-Star nod in 2021, her first year with the Liberty.
