Mets land Marte, Canha, Escobar in $124.5M blockbuster day
The New York Mets and free-agent outfielder Starling Marte have agreed to a four-year, $78-million deal, reports Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
Marte, 33, is coming off a career year spent between the Miami Marlins and Oakland Athletics. The former All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner hit .310/.383/.458 with 12 homers and 47 stolen bases over 120 games last year.
A 10-year veteran, Marte owns a career .797 OPS (116 OPS+) with 126 homers and 296 steals between the Pittsburgh Pirates, Arizona Diamondbacks, Marlins, and A's.
It's the latest in a flurry of moves for the Mets, who also reportedly added infielder Eduardo Escobar and outfielder Mark Canha. Including Marte's deal, New York apparently handed out $124.5 million in guaranteed contracts Friday.
Escobar, 32, is reportedly headed to New York on a two-year, $20-million contract. The former All-Star hit .253/.314/.472 with 28 homers and one steal over 146 games between the Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers last year while primarily playing second and third base.
Canha, meanwhile, is reportedly headed to the Mets on a two-year, $26.5-million contract after playing all seven of his career seasons with the A's. He hit .231/.358/.387 with 17 homers and 12 steals in 141 games last year.
Both Escobar's and Canha's deals are also said to include a third-year team option.
