The NBA Board of Governors will vote at the end of September on making the Coach's Challenge the sole method of late-game reviews, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania on Monday.
Should the proposal pass, certain calls such as out-of-bounds plays will no longer be automatically reviewed with under two minutes left in the game.
With the potential need for multiple video replays on close calls near the end of games, the switch to a single Coach's Challenge would eliminate prolonged stoppages down the stretch of contests.
The NBA has attempted to speed up late-game scenarios in the past. Before the 2017-18 campaign, the league changed the maximum number of team timeouts under three minutes from three to two.
Charania also reported the NBA's discussing the possibility of holding an in-season tournament with $1 million individual player prizes.
While the league approached the concept during its Competition Committee call on Monday, it was not the first discussion about a potential in-season competition.
The NBA sent a proposal to clubs back in 2019, looking to shorten the regular season from 82 games to 78 and add in a mid-season tournament. While those plans never came to fruition, the league will reportedly attempt to push the idea once again.
