'Greek Freak' director: Giannis film will tell 'very inspirational story'
The director of the upcoming Disney film about Giannis Antetokounmpo says the Milwaukee Bucks star's story will move viewers.
"His story is so inspirational. It's a family story," director Akin Omotoso said during a recent appearance on "The HoopsHype Podcast."
"Viewers can look forward to a very inspirational story. You get a chance to get behind the scenes. It's a really emotional story. I was really moved. When I first read the script, I cried."
The film, titled "Greek Freak," came to fruition following a meeting between "300" producer Bernie Goldmann and Antetokounmpo's agent, according to Omotoso, and will focus on Antetokounmpo's upbringing in Greece and rise to basketball stardom.
Omotoso acknowledged balancing Antetokounmpo's responsibilities with the production while playing for the Bucks will be challenging, but he's confident they'll make it work.
"It's a priority in terms of telling the story, but it's also a priority for all of us that he's successful on the court," Omotoso said. "We all know what the Bucks are trying to do, and we're totally supportive of that. I think, like everything, you find the balance. We're looking forward to being part of that journey and being as available as we all can be when we can be and still make it work. It's exciting."
