After missing out on Houssem Aouar, Arsenal are turning to a familiar target in a bid to strengthen their midfield.

The Gunners intend to pay the €50-million release clause in order to sign Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid, reports David Ornstein of The Athletic.

If the deal can be completed before Monday night's transfer deadline, personal terms are believed to already be sorted; the Ghanaian would ink a four-year contract worth around £250,000 per week, according to Nick Ames of The Guardian.

A "seven-figure" signing on fee would also be included, Ames notes.

Atletico have remained steadfast throughout the window that Partey, 27, would only be allowed to depart the Spanish capital if his release clause was met. Arsenal, up against the clock, appear to have accepted that stipulation.

It was believed that the Premier League side would need to sell players before making any more significant additions on deadline day, but aside from Emiliano Martinez's recent move to Aston Villa, limited funds have been generated via sales.

Midfielder Matteo Guendouzi joined Hertha Berlin in something of a corresponding move on Monday, but only on loan.
