Report: Whitecaps getting €1M after Davies, Bayern win Champions League
Bayern Munich's Champions League triumph will set off a small celebration in Vancouver.
Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps are set to earn an additional €1 million from the transfer of Alphonso Davies after the teenage star won the Champions League with Bayern on Sunday, according to ESPN.
Bayern agreed to a deal for the Canadian in 2018 that could ultimately be worth $22 million, depending on the fulfillment of certain clauses. It was a record fee for a player in MLS at the time.
Though not specified by either club, the €1-million Champions League bonus is believed to be part of the "additional compensation" the Whitecaps outlined when they announced the deal.
Davies, 19, played a key part in Bayern's success this season, starring in a makeshift left-back role to help the Bavarian side capture Champions League, Bundesliga, and German Cup honors.
"It's something you dream about as a kid. To win the Champions League is everything for club level, so I'm happy that we can do it and I'm happy to be part of this club as well," Davies said after Sunday's 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in Lisbon.
