Kobe Bryant will be honored in Orange County later this month.
The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to declare Aug. 24 as "Kobe Bryant Day" in the California county, a reference to the No. 8 and No. 24 jerseys he wore during his NBA career, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Orange County Board chairwoman Michelle Steel described the late Los Angeles Lakers star and longtime Newport Beach resident as a "treasured member of our community" who "inspired so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up."
Supervisor Don Wagner noted that Bryant had "moments to celebrate and to condemn" in his lifetime, possibly referencing his 2003 sexual assault civil case.
"Kobe, like all of us, faced challenges, challenges of his own making and challenges thrown at him by life, that he overcome," Wagner said. "Today, we celebrate the effort in overcoming those challenges."
