NBA players plan to kneel during the national anthem on the opening nights of the resumed 2019-20 season, sources told Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times.
The league's top eight teams - the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, and Miami Heat - apparently held a meeting to discuss kneeling, Turner adds.
Multiple players, including Lakers superstar LeBron James, have used their media sessions to address inequality and social injustice. Players have also called for the arrests of the Louisville police officers involved in the killing of Breonna Taylor.
In addition to kneeling during the national anthem, the majority of players will don league-approved social justice messages on their jerseys, including "Equality," "I Can't Breathe," and "Say Their Names." The phrase "Black Lives Matter" will be featured at center court throughout the NBA's restart.
