Report: LSU has 30-plus players quarantined, some related to nightclub outbreak
At least 30 players from LSU have been isolated after contracting or coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, sources told Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger.
Several Tigers had gone to a string of nightclubs where over 100 patrons later tested positive for the coronavirus. The Louisiana Department of Health directed anyone who had gone to the infected bars to isolate for at least 14 days.
Another group of Tigers who visited the establishments tested negative for COVID-19.
LSU doesn't believe anyone contracted the virus during workouts within team facilities.
"When you do contact tracing and get some honesty from kids, it's very easy to see where it came from and what happened," said LSU senior associate athletic trainer Shelly Mullenix. "I can talk to them about wearing a mask, but if your mask is under your nose, you're not wearing a mask."
Mullenix indicated LSU hasn't been alarmed at the number of players forced to quarantine, noting an increase in cases across the country following Memorial Day and protest gatherings.
"It's not surprising we're seeing the rise right now," she said. "It's a pandemic. We should not be shocked. The story is that it's exactly what we said it would be. We were prepared from the get-go for a lot of virus."
None of the players have been hospitalized.
