Woman charged with stealing identity of Rockets owner Fertitta
A Texas woman has been charged after she admitted to purchasing sensitive information belonging to Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta on the dark web, according to Jay R. Jordan of the Houston Chronicle.
Stephanie Hunter, 27, allegedly used Fertitta's name, social security number, and other personal information to apply for a bank credit card and a line of credit with a furniture store. She also credited a fake email address and used her home address in Spring, Texas, for the application, police said.
Lifelock, an identity theft protection company, alerted Fertitta to the scheme after noticing issues with Hunter's application, according to police. Fertitta then contacted deputies with the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable's Office.
Hunter faces charges of fraudulent use of identifying information and using a false statement to obtain credit.
