FIBA suspends officials from France-Lithuania game

FIBA has suspended the referees from Saturday's tilt between France and Lithuania, according to The Associated Press' Tim Reynolds. The group failed to make a proper call that effectively eliminated the Lithuanians from the World Cup.

Memphis Grizzlies center Jonas Valanciunas was at the free-throw line with 30 seconds remaining and Lithuania down two. After making the first, Valanciunas' second attempt bounced off the rim but remained above the circle as French star Rudy Gobert made contact with the rim. The play should've been called a goaltend to tie the game, according to a statement made by FIBA on Sunday.

The officials could've stopped play to review the possession but chose to continue, allowing France to pull away on the following play as Nando De Colo hit a jumper to give his team a three-point lead.

"You don't need to be smart. You need to be honest," Lithuania coach Dainius Adomaitis said after the loss, according to Reynolds. "Stop the game. Go to watch what's happened in the game."

France will face Australia to determine its spot in the quarterfinals as the team looks to remain undefeated.

Meanwhile, Lithuania will take on the Dominican Republic, as its chances of reaching the Olympics took a significant hit.
