Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco announced that the team will cut off contract negotiations with running back Melvin Gordon until the end of the 2019 season, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic.

"With the regular season now here, we have informed his representatives that discussions regarding contract extensions will be postponed until the conclusion of this season," Telesco said, per Gilbert Manzano of the Orange County Register. "So when or if Melvin reports, he'll play this season on his current contract."

Barring a trade, the Chargers insist the tailback can now either play and earn $5.605 million under his fifth-year option or not be paid, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network notes.

Gordon has been away from the Chargers throughout the summer in hopes of earning a substantial raise. His holdout is expected to continue into the regular season.

Los Angeles appears to be planning for life after Gordon, as the team recently granted the disgruntled star and his camp permission to seek a trade.

The 26-year-old reportedly rejected an offer earlier this offseason that would have netted him $10 million annually, as he's seeking roughly $13 million per season.
