Nike 'Moon Shoe' made for 1972 Olympic Trials sells for record $437K
A rare pair of Nike trainers have shattered the world auction record for a pair of sneakers.
The 1972 Nike Waffle Racing Flat "Moon Shoe," which was part of Sotheby's Stadium Goods: the Ultimate Sneaker Collection online auction, sold for $437,500 on Tuesday. The shoes were purchased by collector Miles Nadal, who plans to display them at his private museum in Toronto.
Previously, the record price stood at $190,373, which someone paid in 2017 for an autographed pair of Converse worn by Michael Jordan in the 1984 Olympic basketball final.

The "Moon Shoe" was designed by late Nike co-founder and former University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman for runners at the 1972 Olympic Trials. Only about a dozen were made, and the pair sold by Sotheby's are the only ones known to exist in unworn condition.
