George Edmondson, the legendary Gators fan known as "Mr. Two Bits," passed away on Tuesday at the age of 97, the University of Florida announced Thursday.

Edmondson first performed his cheer of "Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar... All for the Gators, stand up and holler!" at Florida Field in 1949 after Gators fans booed the team during a game against the Citadel. He continued the tradition for the next 60 years, eventually retiring after the 2008 season.

In 2013, Florida began inviting an honorary Mr. Two Bits to perform the cheer before games. Former Gators head coach Steve Spurrier, 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, and NFL broadcaster Cris Collinsworth are just a few who have taken on the role.

"George's passion and love for the Gators produced one of college football's enduring traditions," Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin said in a press release. "The fact that Mr. Two Bits continues to this day speaks to the magnitude of his legacy at Florida. His loyalty and long-standing commitment to the Gators is a fantastic example of the passion that makes college athletics so great."

Edmondson is survived by his wife, Jane, along with his three children, three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
