3 resign from ATP Player Council following contentious board vote
Robin Haase, Jamie Murray, and Daniel Vallverdu have resigned from the ATP Tour Player Council after a seven-hour-plus meeting ahead of Wimbledon.
According to The New York Times' Christopher Clarey, the departures stem from the council's inability to break a deadlocked 5-5 vote on who should fill the vacant seat on the ATP's board of directors following Justin Gimelstob's resignation. Haase and Murray had reportedly voted in favor of former world No. 6 Nicolas Lapentti.
With the Player Council unable to break the tie, current board representatives David Egdes and Alex Inglot selected Weller Evans to fill the vacancy on an interim basis until a newly elected member begins a three-year term Jan. 1, 2020.
Haase, selected to represent players ranked within the top 50, wrote in a statement that "despite being a time-consuming effort, it has been an unproductive year," lamenting that "the topics that I brought to the table were not given much attention."
