Cardinals say Murray's arm talent on same level as Mahomes

Kyler Murray is most often compared to Russell Wilson due to his small stature, elite scrambling ability, and talent for making game-changing plays outside the structure of his offense.

But when it comes to the No. 1 overall pick's arm talent, the comparison several Arizona Cardinals players opted for was Patrick Mahomes, who won the MVP award in his first year and is widely considered to have one of the league's strongest arms.

"You could compare it to that. It's very unique, for sure," said wide receiver Christian Kirk, who spent a year in college with Murray, according to Robert McMananman of the Arizona Republic. "I've talked about it before. Obviously, everyone knows what he can do with his legs, but what he's able to do with his arm and just the way it comes off his hand. It's never a duck; it's always a spiral.

"It's just so quick coming off his hands and the ball is usually never late and it's usually never underthrown."

Star running back David Johnson's set to be on the receiving end of a ton of targets from Murray in head coach Kliff Kingsbury's air-raid offense, and he thinks the Mahomes comparison is far from hyperbole.

"I think you can say that, yeah. That’s a good comparison," Johnson said. "It's high praise, but I think it's a good comparison. Kyler's got one heck of an arm, that's for sure."

For Kingsbury, the similarities between Murray and Mahomes - whom he coached for three seasons at Texas Tech - goes beyond pure arm strength.

"They don't always have to be on a perfect plane or a great pocket," Kingsbury said. "They can throw from spaces or moving or falling off balance and still be accurate and throw with velocity and touch."
