Manchester City rejected Bayern Munich's initial attempt to sign Leroy Sane, turning down an offer worth €80 million, according to The Guardian's Fabrizio Romano.

The German champions are now considering whether to submit an improved offer.

Despite giving him inconsistent playing time last season, it's understood that City manager Pep Guardiola prefers to keep the 23-year-old, who Bayern Munich views as a replacement for outgoing stars Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.

Guardiola told reporters after the FA Cup final that City had offered Sane a contract extension, and the club wouldn't have done so unless it was eager to retain the player.

"We offered to extend his contract," he said. "We want him to stay. What proof is more than for six, seven months we want to extend his contract? If we don’t want him, we don’t extend his contract."

Although City is reluctant to part with the gifted playmaker, Romano adds the team is confident it can move forward with other wings - such as Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, and Raheem Sterling - if Bayern returns with a better offer.

News of Bayern's failed bid comes days after team president Uli Hoeness said it'll be "difficult" to sign the German winger. Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also acknowledged that Bayern are interested in Sane, who they scouted when he represented FC Schalke 04.

Sane, who joined City in 2016, scored 10 goals and provided 10 assists in 31 Premier League appearances during the 2018-19 season.
