The Los Angeles Lakers are working on a contract that will make Tyronn Lue the 27th head coach in franchise history, league sources told Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes.

Lue has yet to formally accept the position, with both parties still negotiating the parameters of the deal.

A recent report indicated the Lakers intended to offer Lue the role, and the team wouldn't be interviewing any more candidates.

Former Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic head coach Frank Vogel could join Lue's staff as a lead assistant, sources told Haynes. Vogel was relieved of his duties with Orlando after the 2017-18 campaign following a 25-57 regular season.

Lue coached current Lakers star LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 128-83 record (.607) across four seasons (2015 to 2019), which included three trips to The Finals and a championship in 2016. He was fired after an 0-6 start this past season

The 42-year-old celebrated his birthday this past weekend with a Lakers-themed cake, adding fuel to speculation Lue will return to the team he won two titles with as a player.

Lue began his playing career with the Lakers in 1998 after the Denver Nuggets selected him 23rd overall, then dealt the guard to Los Angeles.
