Report: Dolphins plan to move on from Tannehill

The Miami Dolphins do not plan on retaining Ryan Tannehill as the team's starter in 2019 and are expected to move on from the quarterback this offseason, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

Tannehill was the Dolphins' first-round pick (No. 8 overall) in 2012. He's been the team's starting quarterback for six seasons, missing the 2017 campaign with a torn ACL.

While Miami hopes to trade Tannehill to acquire draft compensation, the chances of a team accepting his $18.7-million base salary in 2019 is unlikely, Salguero added. The team is also not expected to trade for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles.

The 30-year-old passer and his representatives could agree to renegotiate his contract to facilitate a trade, but their priority is to select where he plays next as a free agent.

With the Dolphins set to hire New England Patriots assistant Brian Flores as their new head coach, owner Stephen Ross will look to start fresh at quarterback.

Miami isn't expected to spend big in the upcoming free-agent pool, per Salguero, but the team could look to draft a signal-caller in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, or in 2020.

If Tannehill is released, he'll wrap an up-and-down tenure in Miami that began with high expectations. He never eclipsed his 27 passing touchdowns thrown in 2014 and failed to take the next step as a franchise pivot. He's also missed 24 games over the last three seasons with various injuries.
