Report: Foles voiding 2019 option in Eagles contract

Nick Foles' offseason saga has begun.

After the Philadelphia Eagles reportedly informed Foles they intend to exercise the $20-million option in his contract for the 2019 season, the quarterback has notified the team that he'll void the option in an effort to become a free agent, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, citing a source.

Foles is required to pay back $2 million to buy out the last year of his deal. However, that doesn't guarantee his freedom.

The Eagles could still place their franchise tag on the backup quarterback with the intention of trading him. The tag would cost roughly $25 million, and the asking price for Foles is reportedly a third-round pick.

Teams can begin franchise tagging players on Feb. 19 and have until March 5 to make those decisions.

The Eagles have publicly declared they believe in Carson Wentz as the starting quarterback going forward, signaling the likely end of Foles' two-year stint in Philly that includes being named Super Bowl LII MVP.
