Report: Neymar may need season-ending surgery after latest foot injury

Life without Neymar is becoming the norm for Paris Saint-Germain.

After missing the final 15 matches of last season with a broken foot, the Brazilian star could reportedly be sidelined for the rest of this campaign with the same ailment, reports Jonathan Johnson of ESPN. Neymar was injured in last week's Coupe de France win over Strasbourg, and Johnson, citing a source, claims he's once again broken the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

Doctors from both PSG and the Brazilian national team are in contact, trying to determine if the 26-year-old requires surgery. There are growing worries in the Selecao camp, according to Johnson, that Neymar could miss this summer's Copa America in his native country if he goes under the knife for the second time in less than a year.

"Remember that Neymar is a PSG player," Brazilian national team director Edu Gaspar said. "We must respect the decisions that the club makes. Rodrigo Lasmar, our doctor, will aid them. Then, after that, we will think about technical decisions. PSG are being rather conservative. They invited Lasmar and other specialists to aid the eventual decision."

His club side, meanwhile, has more immediate concerns.

PSG manager Thomas Tuchel said Sunday that it would be "super difficult" for Neymar to return in time for the French side's Champions League encounter against Manchester United on Feb. 12. Johnson's source went a step further, though, saying it was "almost impossible" that the former Barcelona attacker can recover for next month's trip to Old Trafford.

Alongside Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani, Neymar has been an attacking juggernaut this season, scoring 18 goals in 19 matches between both Ligue 1 and Champions League play.

Should he miss an extended period of time, Tuchel will likely rely heavily on veteran Angel Di Maria to help pick up the scoring slack; the Argentine starred in Neymar's absence against Rennes on Sunday.
