Report: Redskins expect Alex Smith to miss 2019 season

The Washington Redskins are making their 2019 plans with the expectation that quarterback Alex Smith will miss the entire season, sources told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

If Smith is ready to play in 2019, the Redskins would be pleasantly surprised, according to Rapoport.

Smith suffered a broken leg against the Houston Texans in Week 11 of the 2018 campaign.

On Tuesday, Redskins president Bruce Allen said Smith was "on his way to a recovery." Smith made his first public appearance since the injury at a Washington Wizards game Monday.

The 34-year-old led Washington to a 6-4 record with 2,180 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions across 10 starts.

Smith was replaced under center by Colt McCoy, who suffered a leg injury of his own in Week 13. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Josh Johnson closed out the season for the Redskins, who finished third in the NFC East with a 7-9 record.
