Steelers hoping to extend Roethlisberger's contract

Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II is hoping to sign quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to a new deal this offseason.

"We’d like to extend Ben’s contract," Rooney told team insider Bob Labriola. "I always hate to predict the timing of those things, but that’s certainly something that is on the agenda for this offseason.

"The good news is that you certainly look around the league now and quarterbacks are playing at a high level into their 40s. I wouldn’t have expected that years ago, so I feel good about where Ben is physically, mentally, his ability to be a productive player for multiple years. So, I think we feel good about trying to extend his contract."

Roethlisberger just completed his third season of a four-year, $87.4-million contract signed in 2015. It included a $31-million signing bonus and $31 million guaranteed.

In 2018, the six-time Pro Bowler threw for 34 touchdowns, 16 interceptions, and a career-high 5,129 passing yards, boasting a quarterback rating of 96.5. The Steelers, however, went 9-6-1 and failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2013.
