Report: NBA to review Cavaliers' release of McCaw

The NBA will reportedly investigate the Cleveland Cavaliers' signing and release of Patrick McCaw, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times, complying with the Golden State Warriors' request for the league to look into it.

The Cavaliers signed McCaw to a non-guaranteed two-year, $6-million offer sheet Dec. 28 that went unmatched by Golden State. Cleveland released him one week later.

McCaw reportedly rejected a two-year, $5.2-million offer from the Warriors in the summer after declining his $1.7-million qualifying offer.

The 6-foot-7 swingman remained a restricted free agent until agreeing to the Cavs' offer sheet.

There was speculation that the Cavaliers offered McCaw a deal the Warriors couldn't afford in order to pry him away from the defending champions. Cleveland now has the opportunity to re-sign the 23-year-old to a cheaper deal as an unrestricted free agent.

McCaw appeared in three games for the Cavs, averaging 1.7 points in 17.7 minutes per game.
