AD flattered by LeBron's remarks, but focused on Pelicans: 'I don't really care'
While Anthony Davis appreciates the compliment of LeBron James thinking it would be "amazing" if he joined the Los Angeles Lakers, the five-time All-Star is more concerned with the success of his current team: the New Orleans Pelicans.
"I don't really care," Davis told ESPN's Zach Lowe of James' remarks following his team's 123-115 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. "Obviously it's cool to hear any high-caliber player say they want to play with me. But my job is to turn this team around. If we're 15-17, that means I'm not doing my job."
Davis is locked into his contract with New Orleans through the 2019-20 season. He will be a free agency in the summer of 2020 after opting out. The Pelicans have a leg up on the competition, however, as they can offer a five-year, $239-million super-max extension to the near 7-footer in July.
"When that time comes, of course we will see," Davis said. "I love my teammates. I love New Orleans. I love the fans. I talk their slang. I love their food."
Parting ways with longtime agent Thad Foucher to join Klutch Sports' Rich Paul - who represents James - led many to believe a pairing between the two superstars was inevitable. Davis, however, shut that notion down.
"It was just time to make a switch," he said. "It was something I wanted to do."
The Pelicans are now two games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference following their second straight loss and third in four games. They've made the playoffs on two occasions with Davis in tow and have won a single series after sweeping the Portland Trail Blazers in 2017-18.
Davis currently averages a double-double of 28 points and 12.3 rebounds on 50.4 percent shooting, along with 4.7 assists, 2.8 blocks, and 1.8 steals.
