Fans petitioning to have NFL perform 'Spongebob' song at Super Bowl
Over 200,000 people have signed an online petition calling on the NFL to pay tribute to late "Spongebob Squarepants" creator Stephen Hillenburg at Super Bowl LIII.
Hillenburg passed away Monday at the age of 57 following a battle with ALS.
The petition, launched on Change.org, requests that "Sweet Victory" be performed during the halftime show "as a tribute to (Hillenburg's) legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song." The song was featured in a Season 2 episode called "Band Geeks," in which the Bikini Bottom Super Band performs at the Bubble Bowl.
Maroon 5 is set to headline the Super Bowl LIII halftime show, though frontman Adam Levine stated in a recent interview he's "still formulating a lot of things" regarding the performance.
