Report: Mets optimistic about Gomes pursuit once Mariners trade is done
The New York Mets are reportedly on the verge of completing a trade with the Seattle Mariners for closer Edwin Diaz and second baseman Robinson Cano. Once it's completed, New York won't necessarily be finished.
Mets officials believe the deal with Seattle will leave them with the talent pool and financial flexibility required to pursue a trade for Cleveland Indians catcher Yan Gomes, a source tells Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
The Mets and Indians were reported to be discussing a deal for the catcher earlier in November but no agreement has been reached.
Gomes hit .266/.313/.449 with 16 home runs in 112 games in 2018, earning his first trip to the All-Star Game. He would represent a significant upgrade in Queens, where Mets catchers combined for 19 home runs and a .642 OPS.
