Chris Webber not buying comparisons between Duke's freshmen, Fab Five
There's a lot of hype surrounding Duke's freshmen at the moment, but Chris Webber thinks it's unfair to compare them to Fab Five after one game.
"You remember three years ago or four years ago - that's how funny it is, I don't even remember who was on the so-called 'Best Team Ever' with Kentucky that said they would've destroyed us and all that," Webber, one of the members of the famed Michigan squad, said on "The Dan Patrick Show" on Thursday. "I don't know who's on that team, and I'm not dogging them. What I'm saying is that until you do it, I don't really care about all the other stuff.
"Like, that was a great first game and I'm happy. I love the young kids, I want them to do well. But as far as the narrative, you've got a long way to go 'cause it's a long season. I'm sure Coach K is telling them, 'We won one game, so what?'"
As far as Webber is concerned, no class will ever match up with the Fab Five.
"The last thing: Our class can't be compared with any other freshmen class. Period," he said. "There's no Christian Laettner in college. No Bobby Hurley in college. Name me one four-year player that's going top five in the NBA ... I love watching them play, but the comparison is just stupid."
Duke's freshman trio of R.J. Barrett, Zion Williamson, and Cam Reddish combined for 83 points in Tuesday's 118-84 win over Kentucky. They'll host Army on Sunday.
