Chris Johnson announces retirement
Former Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals running back Chris Johnson announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, via his agency.
"CJ2K" spent 10 eventful seasons in the league. In 2009, he became just the sixth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a single campaign. In the same season, he broke the NFL's yards from scrimmage record with 2,509 yards.
"I would like to take this time to thank my family, friends, fans, and teammates who have given their continued support throughout my 10-year career," Johnson said in a statement. "Playing in the NFL was an honor and I am humbled and blessed to have been a part of the league for 10 years."
Johnson was a highly touted prospect in the 2008 NFL Draft out of East Carolina. He famously broke the 40-yard dash record during the NFL combine, running it in 4.24 seconds.
The blazing ball-carrier carried that momentum to draft night, where he was selected in the first round (No. 24 overall) by the Titans. He spent six seasons with Tennessee, one with the Jets, and three with Arizona.
Johnson was selected to three Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team during his career.
