The Philadelphia Eagles placed running back Jay Ajayi on injured reserve on Monday.

Although the Eagles didn't specify the injury, Ajayi tore his ACL and will miss the rest of the season, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The 25-year-old will undergo surgery on Thursday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Ajayi was leading the Eagles with 184 yards and three touchdowns on 45 carries, making his injury a crushing blow to the defending champions' offense.

Wendell Smallwood, Corey Clement, and Josh Adams will compete for increased carries in Ajayi's absence. Darren Sproles could also be a factor when he returns from injury.

Ajayi told reporters on Monday that he wished the Eagles rushed the ball more during Sunday's 23-21 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Philadelphia acquired Ajayi in October 2017 in a trade with the Miami Dolphins. He was an immediate contributor and helped the Eagles capture their first Super Bowl in franchise history.
