Manchester City's attempt to sign Raheem Sterling to a new contract hasn't gone to plan thus far.

Talks between the two parties have stalled over an apparent disagreement regarding Sterling's worth, as the English international is eager to become one of Manchester City's highest-paid players, according to Jamie Jackson of the Guardian.

In his attempt to elevate into the upper echelon of City's wage bracket, Sterling is reportedly seeking a deal that will see his weekly earnings increase from £170,000 to at least £220,000.

There's a belief that Manchester City officials are keen to sign the 23-year-old before he enters the final season of the five-year contract that he signed when he joined the club from Liverpool for £44 million in 2015.

Jackson suggests City's failure to secure Sterling's services before July 2019 could result in his market value plummeting. Interested suitors could take advantage of the defending Premier League champions' failed attempt to lock him up, and possibly sign the winger for a reduced fee when if he enters the final year of his deal.

Manager Pep Guardiola addressed the situation before City's win over Fulham, saying: "It’s well-known we’re delighted with him and would like him to continue. My club knows my opinion and we share that. After that it is the club and the agent."

Sterling entered his fourth season at the Etihad Stadium on the heels of a successful campaign when his 23 goals helped City capture their third Premier League title since 2012.
