Lloris apologizes after being charged with drunk driving

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was charged Friday with drunk driving after a "routine stop" by London police.

Loris was granted bail shortly after the early-morning incident and scheduled for a hearing on Sept. 11.

"I wish to apologize wholeheartedly to my family, the club, my teammates, the manager, and all of the supporters," the 31-year-old said in a statement obtained by The Evening Standard's Dan Kilpatrick. "Drink driving is completely unacceptable. I take full responsibility for my actions and it is not the example I wish to set."

A club spokesperson added that the incident "will be dealt with internally." It's unclear whether Lloris will play Monday against Manchester United.

Lloris, who won the World Cup with France and served as his country's captain, reportedly spent the night out with international teammates Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny. He was stopped by Metropolitan Police at around 2:30 a.m. local time and forced to take a breathalyzer test.

He started in Tottenham's first two matches of the Premier League season, allowing two goals in wins over Newcastle and Fulham.
