Tiger-Cats expect Manziel to be backup all season

If it were up to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Johnny Manziel wouldn't play at all in 2018.

Though the CFL franchise made a high-profile signing by bringing Manziel north of the border, the Ticats have a capable starting quarterback in Jeremiah Masoli. Masoli played in 12 games last season and threw for 3,177 yards while recording 15 touchdowns and five interceptions.

"Until something creates (the need) for me to take him out of there, I would say (Masoli) will be our starter for the whole year, hopefully, and win the Grey Cup," Tiger-Cats head coach June Jones said after Wednesday's practice, according to ESPN's Mike Rodak.

Manziel, who was signed to a two-year contract, will have to compete with three other quarterbacks to be Masoli's primary backup. Hamilton also has Vernon Adams Jr., Bryant Moniz, and Dane Evans at training camp.
