Padres select Xavier Edwards No. 38 overall
With the 38th pick in the 2018 MLB amateur draft, the San Diego Padres selected Xavier Edwards, a shortstop from Wellington, Fla.
The diminutive shortstop has committed to playing his college ball at Vanderbilt University, and has earned comparisons to defensive wizard Ozzie Smith.
Considered the top shortstop on the board, Edwards joins a deep Padres farm system that includes one of the top prospects in baseball and a fellow middle infielder in Fernando Tatis Jr.

MLB.com money quote: "While he is a bit undersized at 5-foot-10, Edwards' performance over the summer and into his senior season had many evaluators looking past that. His speed is his best tool, an easy plus that allows him to get down the line in a hurry from both sides of the plate and be a base-stealing threat."
