Giants' Mara doesn't feel 'urgency' to get Beckham extension done

New York Giants co-owner John Mara reiterated his desire to work out a long-term extension with superstar receiver Odell Beckham Jr., but suggested the club isn't in a rush to get something done.

"I wouldn't say (there's) a sense of urgency," Mara replied when asked about the potential extension Tuesday, courtesy of Art Stapleton from NorthJersey.com. "The contract will get done when it's supposed to get done."

Beckham has been vocal throughout the offseason about wanting a new contract - and about not wanting to wait for it. He's also said he wants to be the highest-paid player in football.

"It's not the first contract negotiation we've ever had," Mara added. "It will get done when it's supposed to get done."

Even with the discontent over his contract, Beckham has attended all of the Giants' voluntary workouts this offseason. The 25-year-old posted more than 1,300 receiving yards and at least 10 touchdowns in each of his first three campaigns in the league despite suiting up for all 16 games just once. He was limited to four contests in 2017 due to a fractured ankle.

In the absence of an extension, Beckham will play the 2018 campaign under the final year of his rookie contract. The Giants could keep him off the open market next offseason by using the franchise tag if the two sides don't work out a new deal beforehand.
