Rookie Roundup: What numbers will top rookies be wearing in 2018?

Players from the 2018 NFL Draft class are beginning to choose their numbers for the coming season.

Some jersey numbers are more common than others, potentially making it difficult for this year's rookie crop to stand out in team lore.

Here's who this year's top rookies will be compared against early in their careers.

Baker Mayfield, Browns - No. 6

Worn by: Travis Coons, Brian Hoyer, Cody Kessler, Seneca Wallace

Mayfield had a pretty easy path to becoming the best quarterback to wear whichever number he chose for the Browns. He did well to avoid Johnny Manziel's maligned No. 2.

No. 6 has been popular of late, with Wallace, Hoyer, and Kessler succeeding one another, but Mayfield needs to spend just three years with the team to have the longest, and likely most successful stay.

Saquon Barkley, Giants - No. 26

Worn by: Rob Carpenter, Orleans Darkwa, Wendell Harris, Antrel Rolle

Barkley's No. 26 was most recently worn by Darkwa for the past three seasons before he was allowed to leave as a free agent this offseason. He scored a total of just eight touchdowns in that time. Carpenter had little more success with the number in parts of five seasons with the team from 1981-85.

While it's a popular number throughout the league - Barkley will have a difficult time measuring up against Le'Veon Bell - he could quickly claim the number as his own for Big Blue.

Sam Darnold, Jets - No. 14

Worn by: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jeremy Kerley, Neil O'Donnell, Richard Todd

Todd, the sixth overall pick of the 1976 draft, spent his first eight seasons in the league with the Jets, going just 42-51-1 with 138 interceptions to just 110 touchdowns.

The well-traveled Fitzpatrick went 13-14 in a two-year stint when playing for the sixth team of his career.

Josh Allen, Bills - No. 17

Worn by: Matt Flynn, Justin Hunter

For better or worse, Allen will become the most notable No. 17 in Bills history.

It's been a well-worn number for the team of late, with five players donning the digits since the beginning of the 2015 season. Bills fans are no doubt hoping their No. 7 pick can provide some sustainability to the number as well as under center.

Josh Rosen, Cardinals - No. 3

Worn by: Derek Anderson, Jay Feely, Billy Gambrell, Carson Palmer

The No. 3 won't be going unused in Arizona as Rosen will immediately take it over from the recently-retired Carson Palmer.

The importance wasn't lost on Rosen when choosing to stick with his college number.

"I looked up to Carson when he was playing for the Bengals," Rosen said in his introductory press conference, according to Jess Root of Cards Wire. "He and Chad Johnson, or Ochocinco, were two of my favorite players. It's an honor to wear his jersey, and hopefully, I can do him proud."

D.J. Moore, Panthers - No. 12

Worn by: Kaelin Clay, Kerry Collins, Josh McCown

Moore's new number was shared by Clay and Charles Johnson in 2017. Collins was the Panthers' fifth overall pick in the 1995 draft. He spent a little more than three years in Carolina, completing just over 50 percent of his pass attempts while going 22-20 in the late '90s.

Calvin Ridley, Falcons - No. 18

Worn by: Taylor Gabriel

Ridley will be joining the Falcons looking to improve on Gabriel's receiving production.

The No. 26 pick should be an upgrade on the diminutive gadget player, after Gabriel turned two solid years with the Falcons into a multi-year contract with the Chicago Bears as a free agent.

Kicker Mike Luckhurst's seven-year run with the Falcons was the longest tenure of any player who's worn No. 18 for the team to date.

Lamar Jackson, Ravens - No. 8

Worn by: Kyle Boller, Billy Cundiff, Trent Dilfer, Matt Schaub

Jackson has already said the Ravens are 'gonna get a Super Bowl out of me,' and that's what he'll need to do to match Dilfer's fame.

He'll have an easier time matching the success of Boller and Schaub, as Boller started just 42 games over five seasons after being made the 19th pick of the 2003 draft. He wore No. 8 for just his rookie season.

Ronald Jones, Buccaneers - No. 22

Worn by: Sammy Davis, Rod Jones, Doug Martin

Jones takes over No. 22 from Martin, who the Buccaneers are hoping he'll be able to replace. Martin made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2012, rushing for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns with another 472 yards and a touchdown coming as a receiver. He was named an All-Pro in 2015, but averaged just 2.9 yards per carry over 19 games in his next, and final two seasons with the club.

Shaquem Griffin, Seahawks - No. 49

Worn by: Itula Mili, Kache Palacio

Griffin hasn't officially chosen his number as of yet, but that hasn't stopped No. 49 from being the fifth-highest sold rookie jersey thus far. The jerseys won't ship until the fifth-round pick confirms his number.

The number has been reasonably popular among Seahawks' alumni, with eight players having worn 49. Palacio did so most recently in 2017.
